a member of the Heritage Aviation Program. A: By choice last spring, I joined the team on the road for the last half of the show’s season and then started flying the day we returned to Langley.
The training consisted of approximately 20 demo flights. You practice the demo with an artificial floor over the water and then gradually descend in altitude to begin as you fly the demo over Langley, all with the previous demo pilot as your ground instructor.
Josh “Cabo” Gunderson taught me and I can’t think of a better person to learn from. Since I completed my certification in December, we’ve been flying local practices about two to three times a week to make the demo look its best.
We will continue training to the Heritage Flight Training Course and head to our first event. A: Air shows and demo flights are what first sparked my interest in aviation. I have no aviation or military background in my family, but I grew up near the Davenport Municipal Airport, which hosts the Quad City Air Show every year.
I go to shows every summer and my first one was 6 months. Eventually, I might meet a pilot from the demo team, just as I decided to become a pilot myself. The demo pilot set an example that I wanted to emulate and I thought it was a noble cause to serve your country while being a fighter pilot.

A: Flying in the original T-6 Texan with the Aeroshell team was the closest thing to flying a warbird. I also got to fly with Paul Wood of the Warbird Heritage Foundation in the L-39, and he played a big part in sparking my interest in warbirds.
I love the P-38 Lightning so flying it would be exciting, but I love warbirds so one of those would be awesome. During my pilot training, I would take time in the morning before starting the course to imagine being assigned to an F-22, which gave me a lot of motivation to work hard at all of our training events.
I am very humbled and privileged to have the opportunity to fly the F-22. Larson grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 2015, where he also spent time as a parachute instructor and participated in approximately 700 skydives before earning his wings.
With more than 750 hours of flight time in the Raptor, Larson leads a 14-member F-22 demonstration team that showcases the capabilities of one of the Air Force’s most advanced fighter jets through its unique combination of stealth, speed and agility.

He did an amazing job of teaching me to fly demonstrations the right way: safely, but also aggressively. There’s a lot that goes into this job beyond flying, especially with the crowd interaction and how you lead a team.
In terms of the logistical planning that goes along with a demo, we are unique as an F-22 demo team because we don’t have our own aircraft. We borrow fighter jets from any unit that is close to the event, so there can be a lot of challenges that go along with that.
