Videos Of Tanks – It’s been this way for much of February. Videos taken by Ukrainian fighters and shared online have shown Russian tanks attempting to cross fields and roads, only to crash to a halt as a mine blows up beneath them.
And it appears to keep happening, with Russian forces unable to avoid the mines. The Javelin is a portable anti-tank missile system that can be carried and launched by a single person. With a range of 2 ½ miles, it traces its target’s thermal picture and is useful against tanks because it can strike from the top, like the track-and-field spear that shares its name.

The Javelin is a “fire and forget” system, in which self-guided missiles let troops take cover or reload immediately after firing. Designed by the US companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, the Javelin was first deployed in 1996.
Land Mine
After more than a month of war, the Russian military has faced debilitating casualties fighting an enemy one-third the size. With imported weapons, many from NATO countries, the Ukrainian army has so far denied entry by Russian forces to nearly all of Ukraine’s major cities while destroying Russian tanks in the process.
Mines have played a key role in the fighting in Ukraine over the past year. After their initial invasion last year failed to take Kyiv, Russian forces pulled back, mining roads and fields. Groups are working to de-mine those areas to make them safe for civilians.
One year into the war in Ukraine, the conflict does not appear closer to ending, and Russian tanks appear no better at avoiding destruction. Armored forces attempting to take the Ukrainian town of Vuhledar are being decimated by landmines.
Both powers are capable of jamming, intercepting and shutting down U.S. chatter. And any fight against them, against China in the Indo-Pacific or against Russia in Europe, will require the conquering of massive distances and other geographic hurdles.
The Armor Challenge
An Army leader previously told C4ISRNET challenges exist simply because of the diversity and needs of the armored fleet; it is, said then-Brig. Gen. Jasper Jeffers, deputy commanding general of maneuver for the 3rd Infantry Division, “massively different in size, scope and the actual physics.”
Armor represents some of the Army’s most space-constrained platforms. Working a new kit into them can be technically daunting, let alone time consuming. Russia’s attempts at an offensive near Vuhledar, as much of the fighting in the Donbas region turned into an effective standstill, with neither side able to break through.
In the fall, after losing swaths of land in Ukraine’s east, Russia tried to take the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut, three hours south from Vuhledar. That has turned into a battle of attrition, with trench warfare and devastated no man’s land straight out of World War I. Despite heavy amounts of artillery, armor and drones, neither side has been able to break through the other’s lines.
During the past few weeks, the internet has been flooded with videos of Russian tanks bursting into flames. The Ukrainian military is destroying tanks with a variety of weapons, including land mines, Stugna-P guided missiles, and shoulder-fired missiles like Javelins and NLAWs.
Step By Step
Russian armor losses have been so severe that the military leadership is dipping into a fleet of outdated vehicles. The military mobilized an unspecified amount of BTR-50 armored personnel carriers, which have been spotted in Russian-occupied territory.
The vehicle was initially introduced by Soviet armed forces in 1954. Despite having a huge advantage in armor when the war broke out, severe losses have weakened Russia’s forces. Ukraine meanwhile is receiving a variety of Western vehicles, including Leopard 2 tanks, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.
“A year of the war in Ukraine, a year of suffering, a year of getting our willpower stronger than ever, as strong as this tank. Thank you, Germany, thank you to the free world for all that you do for us,”
he added. The Army is taking a stepwise approach to improving soldier communications and its own larger networks, the invisible threads that tie together assets on the front lines and back home. The increments are known as capability sets, which, like Apple’s iPhone, build upon the development and distribution cycles of one another.
Bakhmut is also where the Kremlin-aligned mercenary organization the Wagner Group has been leading the push, suffering heavy losses along the way, many of which are from the convicts recruited into the group. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin is currently in a war of words with the Russian military, accusing it of not supplying his organization with ammunition.
As part of that conflict, he is posting photos of dead Wagner soldiers in Bakhmut, giving a glimpse at how severe Russian losses are in the battle. The town itself has been shattered by the fighting, with buildings bombed out and streets abandoned.
Other trials and pilots, namely in early 2022, at Fort Stewart, Georgia, were designed to better understand the needs of interconnected armored formations, which rumble across the landscape and often cannot afford to stop, but run the risk of disconnecting.
A land mine is a device that is placed on or under the ground and is designed to explode when a person or vehicle passes over it. Causing indiscriminate damage, land mines can lie dormant for years before being triggered and often pose issues to civilians long after combat has ended.
First deployed in World War II, land mines have been used in many conflicts, including the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the first Gulf War. (As the video below notes, it’s unclear exactly which weapon was used.)
PEO C3T dispatched an expert team to Project Convergence, the Army’s contribution to the Pentagon’s connect-everything campaign, Joint All-Domain Command and Control, late last year to explore the intersection of modernized radios and armor, including the prized Abrams tank.
Combat in Ukraine is revealing that advances in guided missiles are making it much easier for combatants, even inexperienced volunteers, to destroy tanks. Of the 2,840 tanks in Russia’s active arsenal, at least 340 had been destroyed in Ukraine as of Tuesday.
Like the Javelin, the NLAW is a portable anti-tank weapon that can be launched by a single person on foot and uses the fire-and-forget method. The weapon uses “predictive line of sight” technology, calculating the target’s distance and speed.
The NLAW can hit moving targets 20 to 400 meters away and stationary targets up to 800 meters away. Former boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko has posted a video of himself driving a Leopard tank that Germany has sent for Ukrainian troops to fight Russia in the ongoing war.
The video has been shot at an undisclosed location in which Mr Klitschko is heard saying he never thought he would drive a ”cat” a year ago. He also thanks Germany and the “free world” for helping Ukraine in the hour of crisis.
The 46-year-old is the brother of Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv. Along with its own Soviet-era mines, Ukraine has a supply of American remote anti-armor mine systems, of which the United States provided approximately 6,000 of in late 2022. Right now, Ukrainian forces at Vuhledar are outnumbered when it comes to armor — the
first Leopard tanks donated by Poland arrived in Ukraine on Friday — but the last two weeks have shown its mines are enough to hold back Russian tanks, at least for now. Designed and produced in Ukraine, Stugna-P is an anti-tank missile system.
At 200 pounds, it is heavier, less portable, and cheaper than the Javelin, but has proven extremely effective against Russian tanks. It can be set up on tripods and camouflaged, allowing operators to hide before discharging the missile via remote control.
With a firing range of 328 feet to 3.1 miles, Stugna-P can be manually guided using a remote control or left to be guided by its own laser in fire-and-forget mode. Network modernization is a top priority for the Army as it shifts to multidomain operations — the ability to deter and defeat an enemy, with help from others, in any location — and wrestles with the challenge of upscaled conflicts and communications environments jeopardized by adversaries such as

Previously identified issues associated with legacy Strykers and newer communications gear have been resolved, the Army said.
Fighting around the town has been ongoing since March 2022, but has been escalating since Jan. 24 when Russia launched a renewed offensive. It’s seen as the first part of an expected spring offensive, and so far is not going well.
Exact losses are unconfirmed; Ukraine’s military claims that in mid-February Russia lost 36 tanks. British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace claimed, citing reports, that a Russian brigade was “effectively annihilated” and 1,000 fighters killed between Feb. 14-15.
Despite those losses, Russia is continuing its push, and with that still trying to move its armor forward, directly into Ukrainian landmines. And the results are the same. Videos show lead tanks getting disabled and the following tanks struggling to maneuver without meeting the same fate.
McLEAN, Va. — A U.S. Army office tasked with improving battlefield connectivity is now tinkering with a combination of armored vehicles and advanced communications gear, as the service prepares for larger, more-dispersed fights with heftier formations and ordnance.
The Program Executive Office for Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, or PEO C3T, has in recent months increasingly focused on what is known as Capability Set 25, an expected assemblage of commercial, off-the-shelf technologies and specialized military equipment, all
with the Army division, a footprint of 15,000 soldiers and firepower, in mind. “Col. Shermoan Daiyaan and the team went down with some of the integrated tactical network,” PEO C3T boss Maj. Gen. Anthony Potts said at the IT Day conference, “and we did some preliminary prototyping onto some of their armored vehicles, onto some of the tanks.”
“The days of the Army building its own capabilities only, and deploying them, are gone. It will always be a mix of commercial and military-unique capabilities, and that’s what’s going to make us effective,” Lt. Gen.
John Morrison, the service’s top uniformed information-technology official, said last month at the Army IT Day conference, hosted by the Northern Virginia chapter of the communications- and electronics-focused group AFCEA. Capability Set 25 is the first batch to inherently focus on the division, a formation capable of sustained fighting and upkeep.
Previous capability sets were tied to the brigade, roughly 5,000 soldiers. Such smaller setups were the U.S. military’s mainstay for the war on terror, a global sweep pitched by a previous president as excising “a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them.”
A preliminary review of Capability Set 25 is expected in the coming months, in the spring. A critical design review, which will examine technological maturity and cost effectiveness and could crack open the door for procurement, will eventually follow.
Germany sent the first company of Leopard 2 tanks, which includes 14 vehicles, earlier this month. Poland, which also operates these tanks, delivered four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine on Friday, the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
