and installed it on the back. Attached to the fan cover were several long strips of orange material that, when turned on, flew like flames shooting from an engine. For the wings and tail pieces, I used some thin wrap from Home Depot and cut it to shape.

I learned from experience that it was difficult to get through people with larger floats, so I designed the wings to fold and snap onto long piano courses, making it a breeze to get through people. The old swing on the tree was painted and bolted, complete with spray paint all silver.
I was worried about cutting my little pilot on the sharp edges, so I got some plastic wire from an auto parts store and ran it around the edge of the cockpit. The control stick was made from a toilet plunger that I cut to length and put on a bike handle with a fake rocket button (an old trunk button from a car).

I need a car battery to run the fan, so I mounted a small tractor battery behind its seat and wired it up. I even wired some orange LEDs into the engine to enhance the flame effect. I ran the wires on the handle to a switch that I mounted on the pull handle that I could turn on/off while pulling it around.
I needed something light for the rockets, so I cut some plastic wire tubing to size and used the ends of $1 foam soccer balls for the tips. Some thin flat plastic from a freezer jar was cut and painted for the rocket fins, then inserted into the grooves I cut into the channel.

The rockets were then mounted under the wings. It needed a dash, so I built that up on the fly as well and installed some airplane style switches, some old race car gauges and a digital battery gauge to monitor battery life. I got some battery powered red and green lights and fitted them to the tips of each wing to add more ‘pop’ at night and put some ‘maverick’ and ‘goose’ Jet set ‘top gun’ decals on them.
My son would be Maverick, but who would be his Goose co-pilot? To set up the comedy, a plastic goose was placed behind him and most people understood it, but the children only asked why Aflec the duck was in there. The Jet was successful, he won a few trophies in it, and I had quite a bit of time in it.
