I was also able to fly with Paul Wood of the Warbird Heritage Foundation in an L-39, and he played a huge part in sparking my interest in warbirds. I love the P-38 Lightning, so flying it is fun, but I love warbirds so anyone would be interested in it.
Q: Can you tell us more about the process of transferring from one test mirror to another? How have you worked with “Cabo” to ensure a smooth transition, and should fans expect any changes to the aircraft this year?

Humbled to have the opportunity to join this amazing team. The guidance I received from Air Force pilots and supervisors, along with the air shows I was to attend in Iowa, inspired me to serve my country as a fighter pilot, Larson said.

After we parked them, we drove through Denali National Park on our way home. We flew low over the park in an F-22 all over the mountains, lakes, and glaciers in late summer, so the scenery was beautiful.
This is one of the dream planes if you want to become a pilot. A: Based on my decision last spring, I joined the team on the road for the latter half of the show season and started flying the days we got back to Langley.
The course consists of about 20 experimental aircraft. You practice the form with a computerized floor on the water and then slowly lower to your starting height as you fly. I was taught by Josh “Capo” Gunderson, and I couldn’t think of a better person to teach than him.
Since I finished my degree in December we have been running local practices about two to three times a week to showcase the practice at its best. We will continue to practice until Heritage Aviation leads to our first exhibition.
A: What drew me to the F-22 was seeing a demonstration in 2015 before I started my pilot training. I knew I wanted to fly fighters but seeing the Raptor in action had a profound effect on me.
During pilot training, I would take time in the morning before work to imagine being assigned to the F-22, which gave me a lot of motivation to work hard in all of our training. I am so grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to fly the F-22.
Air Force officials have received congressional authorization for more F-22 Raptors. About 90 Raptors have been delivered to the Air Force to date. The 478th Aeronautical Systems Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base oversees the production, supply and delivery of additional F-22s.

I’ve had the opportunity to fly a T-6 Texan and fly in formation with the P-51 and P-40 from the WWII Fagen Fighters Museum, so that’s something I’ve enjoyed doing my whole life. I went to the Air Force Academy and started flying raptors, and ever since then I’ve wanted to go back to the pilot world and pay for the inspiration I had as a kid.

A: I could go down the list of ACC and Experimental models from the late ’90s to the 2000s. I met many of them and they had a profound influence on me. Without the example they set and their words of wisdom, I wouldn’t be here doing this work today.
I was also able to meet legends like Jim Leroy, Jimmy Franklin, and Bobby Younkin at air shows in my hometown, which inspired me to have a greater interest in more than just military aircraft. A: I started with “Cabo” teaching the demo and flying a fighter jet behind me for the first two episodes, after which he served as a safety observer from the ground.
We also discuss a lot, discussing HUD bars and pictures of the ground after each ride. He did a great job teaching me to fly the demo the right way: safely but also powerfully. There’s a lot more that goes into this job other than flying, especially in interpersonal relationships and how you lead a team.
In terms of plans that go along with the demo, we are unique as F-22 testers in that we don’t have our own aircraft. We borrow combat-ready aircraft from any unit close to the show, so there can be a lot of challenges that come with that.
Larson grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 2015, where he also spent time as a parachutist instructor and participated in nearly 700 skydives before earning his wings.
With more than 750 hours flying time in the Raptor, Larson leads a 14-member F-22 demonstration team that demonstrates the capabilities of one of the Air Force’s most advanced combat aircraft through its unique combination of stealth, speed, and agility.
