The product page of the Mango Mango website features three separate mango-based products, all of which can be purchased online. There are also testimonials from satisfied customers, who offer rave reviews including “this is AMAZING!!”, “Unbelievable product,” and “Home made with perfection!”
Lakesha Brown-Renfro, one of the founders of Simply Panache, is the wife of Leron Renfro, a sailor who recently retired after 20 years of service. Starting a company and running a successful business is a challenging feat for anyone.
However, devoting time to a startup can seem even more daunting as a military spouse dealing with a PCS move or deployments. Although it wasn’t an easy task, Lakesha was able to launch several successful companies with her two business partners, Nzinga Teule-Hekima and Tanecia Willis, while also balancing her time as a mother and military wife.
According to Mango.org, this tasty and aromatic stone fruit originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It made its way to other parts of the world between the third and fourth centuries, when it spread to East Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America.

These days, mangoes are a popular fruit just about everywhere, thanks to their amazing flavor and versatility. The Shark Tank camera crew visited Lakesha, Nzinga, and Tanecia in their hometown and they said Mango Mango was Shark bait!
In the Shark Tank, they asked for $75K for 20% of their business. After singing their song, “spread it, mix it, shake it, stir it,” they tempted the Sharks with a variety of Mango Mango based goodies including shrimp and Mango Mango sorbet.
They’ve sold $138K year to date and are looking for money for production facilities. The women are also active in supporting other entrepreneurs in their community (per The Scout Guide). Lakesha Brown-Renfro, Nzinga Teule-Hekima, and Tanecia Willis were integral in creating Black Restaurant Week to assist with marketing and other business endeavors.
For this trio, there’s life after “Shark Tank.” Lakesha Brown-Renfro, Nzinga Teule-Hekima, and Tanecia Willis spread the love and their mango preserves called Mango Mango in Shark Tank episode 505 on September 27. The three women are friends and party planners who developed a mango preserves product.

They developed Mango Mango while working their party planning business, Simply Panache. They use the preserves in many of the recipes they use for the various events they plan and host. Mango Mango preserves were such a hit with their customers, they decided to start manufacturing and selling them.
They currently sell online, at farmers markets, and at about a dozen Virginia Whole Foods Markets and gourmet food shops. The three women promise to make a big entrance as they dance in, singing the praises of their Mango Mango preserves.
Although they didn’t receive a deal on Shark Tank, Lakesha explains that the exposure from the show helped their business grow immensely. She elaborates, “Shark Tank was great for us. It was awesome, as it expanded the reach of our flagship product, ‘Mango Mango’ Mango Preserves which resulted in increased sales.
We were then able to invest that revenue in the creation of new businesses, mainly our bistro, Mango Mangeaux.” While most of the Sharks were impressed by the taste of the mango-infused recipes, they had misgivings.
All Shark Tank Recipes Included
Kevin O’Leary believed the product was more akin to a “hobby” than a bonafide business. Robert Herjavec loved the taste of the mango preserves but had concerns that his love for the stuff could make him “eat all the profits.”

Lakesha firmly believes that it is possible to juggle military life and a startup because “entrepreneurship is all about being dedicated, flexible, focused and committed to seeing your vision realized regardless of the obstacles along the way.
Military spouses are very adaptable, flexible and know how to recreate their lives over and over again, all of which makes entrepreneurship a perfect option for military spouses.” Since Simply Panache appeared on Shark Tank, the company has expanded well beyond mango preserves.
Between Mango Mangeaux, Simply Panache Nail Bar & Pedi Spa, and their boutique hotel, Panache Place, Lakesha, Nzinga, and Tanecia have a multitude of services. The women don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon though. And they added a MediSpa component to their boutique spa this fall.
Mark didn’t know enough about the space, so he’s out. Lori said she doesn’t like Mango, but loved everything she ate, and she thinks they should fund themselves from their income. She says they don’t need the Sharks, and she’s out.

Daymond, who can’t believe Mr. Wonderful was in the jelly business, followed Kevin’s lead and he’s out too. Robert loved the product so much, he’s afraid he’d eat all the profits; he likes it so much, he’s afraid he’d make bad decisions.
Robert’s out too. The ladies dance their way out of the Tank and all the Sharks except Kevin said they’d make it. They’re just glad the Sharks like Mangoes! Since appearing on the Shark Tank, the ladies have taken their products to a new level with the boost from the Shark Tank effect so familiar to entrepreneurs.
After appearing on the show, orders poured in, for over 15,000 jars. The preserves continue to fly off the shelves of markets like Whole Foods, but the ladies didn’t stop there. In Spring of 2014, they opened the Mango Mangeaux Cafe in the Phoebus section of Hampton.
Even without a Shark deal, these ladies have kept their business growing and thriving, and have pushed forward to achieve something many entrepreneurs only dream of: a brick-and-mortar store front. She always had an eye for business opportunities, and Lakesha, Nzinga, and Tanecia first launched their event planning firm, Simply Panache, in 2001. However, within a few years, they had an idea for an additional business.
Life After Shark Tank
“Good communication starts with your spouse. There has to be an agreement that you will support your spouse’s military career and pursuits, and your spouse will support your entrepreneurial pursuits,” Lakesha states. She adds that Leron has always been very supportive of her career, and Lakesha, Nzinga, and Tanecia often call him their “fourth partner” or the “braun to their beauty.”

In 2020, USA Today reported on the ladies’ continued success after their “Shark Tank” appearance. In the two days after the episode aired, Mango Mango earned $300,000 in sales (via YouTube). The team also opened a restaurant, Mango Mangeaux, which appears to be thriving based on the $100,000 in profits the establishment earns on a monthly basis (per USA Today).
Transitioning To Civilian Life
They don’t want to use a co-packer because they want control over their product. Mr. Wonderful reveals he once owned a jelly company (who would have thought) and didn’t like the margins; he thinks it’s a hobby and he’s out.
The ladies say they’re working hard, selling in 8 Farmer’s Markets a week. Robert kept shoveling more Mango goodies onto his plate – he absolutely loves the stuff! The ladies said they could get money elsewhere, but they wanted to party with the Sharks.
Simply Panache’s business that was featured on Shark Tank evolved out of their event planning company. Lakesha says, “our mango preserves were used as an ingredient in the catering aspect for a plethora of our events.”
Because the mango preserves were such a big hit, they decided to start selling it separately as a flagship product. Simply Panache is a national event-planning firm based out of Hampton, Virginia, run by three women.
If you’re a fan of the television show Shark Tank, you may have even seen them present their mango preserves to the sharks. This company is a perfect example of small business owners believing in their vision and running with it.

She explains that “the structure of military leadership is quite different than that of civilian businesses.” Her best advice for families about leaving the military is to plan. However, she adds, “if you have an entrepreneurial idea and have the drive to see it through, this is a great time to get started.”
“I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and mindset. From childhood, I was the child with the lemonade stand. I had a hair bow business and I started a teen membership club called the Queen of Hearts, in which my friends and I planned outings and community activities,” Lakesha explains.
Common mango-based preparations include both sweet and savory dishes. The fruit can be added to salads, stir fries, and rice dishes. It can also be used in Thai sticky rice and smoothies, as well as sorbet and cakes.
Many jams, jellies, and preserves are also made with mangoes for a burst of flavor. Not all entrepreneurs need to secure a deal on Shark Tank in order to experience immense success. In fact, one Hampton, Virginia-based company saw tremendous growth and expansion after leaving the hit show with no deal.
And as late as last month, Lakesha Brown-Renfro’s mango inspired business grew again. In addition to running multiple companies, the Renfros are also in a big transition stage right now after Leron’s retirement from the Navy.
“Although my husband has always been very involved in the businesses, from an entrepreneurial perspective, the transition from military to civilian life has not been easy,” Lakesha says. As they prepared foods for clients, the women would often incorporate mango preserves into the recipes. These recipes were a huge hit with numerous clients and guests, which spurred the team to develop a manufacturing process and provide the preserves to local shops and markets in their home base of Virginia.
I just wished they had listened to Kevin about going with a copacker. They seemed like serial entrepreneurs to me. How much can they invest in the mango business if they are still dabbling in other things such as event planning, nursing, and medicine.
